AWS RDS Pricing in India 2026 — Mumbai Region

AWS RDS in Mumbai region offers managed databases for MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, MariaDB, Oracle, and Aurora (Amazon's native MySQL/Postgres-compatible). Pricing depends on engine, instance class, storage, IOPS, Multi-AZ, and licensing model. As authorised AWS partner, National IT Service offers INR billing, RDS cost optimisation, Multi-AZ DR setup, and migration from on-prem databases.

Plans & pricing (INR)

RDS for MySQL / PostgreSQL / MariaDB — From $0.043/hr (db.t3.micro, 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM) to $4.32/hr (db.r6i.16xlarge) — Mumbai

Per instance/hour

RDS for SQL Server — From $0.305/hr (db.t3.xlarge SE, 4 vCPU) — Mumbai (license-included)

Per instance/hour

RDS for Oracle — From $0.272/hr (db.t3.medium SE2, 2 vCPU) — Mumbai (license-included or BYOL)

Per instance/hour

Aurora MySQL / PostgreSQL Compatible — From $0.118/hr (db.r6g.large) — Mumbai

Per instance/hour

RDS Reserved Instances (1-year / 3-year) — Save 35-69% vs On-Demand

India-specific notes

Multi-AZ doubles the instance cost but is essential for production HA. Storage is billed separately: GP3 SSD $0.115/GB-month, Provisioned IOPS $0.138/GB + $0.105/IOPS-month. Backups beyond your DB size are billed at $0.095/GB-month. Through National IT Service you get INR + GST billing, RDS sizing analysis, Multi-AZ vs Read Replica strategy, engine selection (Aurora vs RDS), and migration planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aurora vs RDS MySQL/Postgres — which is right?

Aurora is faster (5x MySQL, 3x Postgres), has better availability (6-copy replication), and scales storage automatically. RDS is cheaper at smaller scales (under 50 GB DB). For most new production deployments above 100 GB or 1,000 TPS, Aurora is the right choice — the performance + reliability gains justify the modest premium. For dev/test or very small workloads, RDS MySQL/Postgres is more economical.

SQL Server License-Included vs BYOL — which is cheaper?

License-Included: simpler procurement, but ~40% more expensive than BYOL on instance cost. BYOL: bring your own Microsoft SQL Server license (requires Microsoft Software Assurance with Azure Hybrid Benefit for license mobility), pay only for compute. For long-running production SQL Server workloads on RDS, BYOL typically saves 25-35% over license-included. Requires upfront license investment.

Do we need Multi-AZ for production?

For business-critical production DBs: yes. Multi-AZ provides synchronous replication to standby in a different AZ + automatic failover within 60-120 seconds during AZ outage or maintenance. Cost: ~2x single-AZ. For non-critical / dev / test: single-AZ is fine. We help map RDS HA strategy to your RTO/RPO requirements.

How do we migrate from on-prem MySQL/Postgres/MS SQL to RDS?

Three approaches: (1) AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) — best for minimal-downtime migrations, supports continuous replication, $0.018/hr for db.t3.micro replication instance. (2) mysqldump / pg_dump / native backup-restore — simplest for small DBs with maintenance window. (3) AWS Snowball — for very large DBs (>10 TB) with limited network. We have done DMS migrations for Indian clients with under 5 minutes downtime on 500 GB databases.

What about read replicas for scale?

RDS and Aurora support read replicas for scaling read traffic. RDS: 1-15 cross-region or in-region replicas (asynchronous). Aurora: up to 15 in-region replicas with sub-100ms lag (best-in-class). Typical pattern: 1 writer + 2-3 readers behind RDS Proxy. Indian SaaS startups scale read replicas during business hours, scale down at night.
