What is SASE? Secure Access Service Edge Explained

SASE is a cloud-delivered security framework that combines network security functions (like firewall, secure web gateway) with wide-area networking (WAN) capabilities into a single service delivered from the cloud.

Coined by Gartner in 2019, SASE represents a fundamental shift in how enterprise security and networking are delivered. Traditional networks had a hard perimeter — all security happened at the corporate data centre. With employees working remotely and applications moving to the cloud, this model broke down. SASE solves this by moving security to the cloud, close to where users and applications actually are.
